Xiaobo doesn’t answer.

 

He just stares through the glass.

 

His mother — unconscious.

His father — hooked to machines, but awake.

 

And staring directly at him.

 

As if he knew this was coming.

His father motions the guards away.

 

They hesitate.

 

But they obey.

 

Xiaobo walks in.

His father sees it.

Bruce grabs a metal IV pole like a weapon.

She can see them clearly.

 

More clearly than anyone else.

One of the creatures lunges at Xiaobo’s father.

 

Xiaobo moves.

The Wolf moves first.

 

The world snaps into stillness.

 

Absolute time freeze.

 

Everything gray.

 

Except:

 

Xiaobo.

The Wolf.

The Covenant leader.

 

The leader smiles.

 

He can move too.

 

Leader:

“Good. You are aware.”

 

The Wolf steps forward, larger than before.

 

Its voice is no longer a whisper.

 

It speaks inside Xiaobo’s mind.

 

“You must choose. Remain human. Or become Guardian.”

 

Xiaobo looks at his father.

 

His mother.

 

Sam.

 

Bruce.

 

The bodies from the lab flash in his mind.

 

His fists clench.

 

Gold eyes ignite.

 

Black and red ink erupts from his skin — crawling like living tattoos.

 

His veins glow.

 

The floor cracks beneath him.

• Wolf fully manifested behind him

• Voice layered — his and the Wolf’s together

“You picked the wrong family.”

 

He launches forward.
